Mapping Joystick

I have joystick mapper and am trying to map a simple 2 axis - 8 button joystick.

I have tried both a gravis tilt destroyer & a buffalo classic usb gamepad

I am running OS X 10.11.6 (El Capitan)

While trying to map....
Both joysticks behave the same way, the shoulder buttons and the start/select buttons recognize when I press them.
The d-pad and 4 main buttons do not recognize when I press them.

Any help is appreciated.
